Age Of Extinction Grimlock (Part 1)

After 7 years of wait and 3 transformers movie gone, Grimlock and his Dino-buddies finally made their way to the big screen appearing in the latest franchise Transformers movie: The Age of Extinction.

T-Rex mode:

There are lots and lots of different versions of Grimlock released after the movie. The one that I am reviewing today comes from the Platinum Edition Age of Extinction Voyager Class Twin pack set. This Grimlock unlike the rest had very nice chrome applications on his head section which made him look unique.

At first glance, you can tell that Michael Bay has a very different interpretation of how a T-Rex will look. The way this thing is designed really reminds me of the first 'Godzilla' movie where the director, same thing mistaken a Kaiju to be a mutated lizard. In my opinion, this Grimlock looks nothing like a T-Rex.

Not only the concept of the T-Rex is different, the color scheme is different too. Here you can see Grimlock's color scheme consist of brown, black, grey, green and chrome. In fact this color scheme is also different from the one in the movie. The movie version looks to be gun metal finishing instead of this brown looking crawler.

Front and Back view:

The front and back view shows a lot about the proportions. The head looks too big and the thin legs with huge crawls are some of what is seen as out of proportion.

Side view:

From the side, Grimlock looks horrible. The entire figure looks extremely disjoint. The head, back and legs looks a single piece while the stomach and tail looks to be another. The proportions are bad too with him having a big head and small body. Despite many said that this voyager class Grimlock is the best version, in my opinion, it is still very bad.

Details:

Let's look at the figure in detail.

The Head:

Before I even own this figure, I had already heard complains about his head design looking like a dog. Now that I finally own one and with it in my hand, I finally understand why. The shape of his head is nothing like a T-Rex. The 'pointed ears' looking horns made it worse. I seriously don't understand how the designer can screw this up. The only one thing that came out good is the nice chrome finishing as well as the green web patterned eyes.

Grimlock's three finger crawl as well as the odd looking tail looks out of place. The crawls are too low and the tail looks too rigid and straight.

The design of Grimlock's feet is nice but the proportions are again out. Here you can see the thigh section is small compared to the lower feet. The crawls are extremely big.

This is the back of Grimlock. Can you spot his robot mode head?

Gimmicks and Accessories:

Grimlock's first gimmick is his jaw that is movable. There is a grey button that is location at the left side of his head. Once pressed, the jaw closes.

The second gimmick is his tail which can be extended when his robot mode weapon is attached to it.

This is how it looks with the weapon attached. Well, it doesn't look too right isn't it?

Here is it from another angle.

Transformation:

With 99% of his body parts looking disjoint. It didn't take me a second to figure out how to transform him to robot mode.

Next week: More Grimlock in Robot mode.
